While visiting Santa Monica, California recently to film electric bike reviews, I saw a bunch of Bird electric kick scooters. These things are parked all over... some were on the main street, others near restaurants towards the South end of town, some were even parked at the apartment complex where I was staying with a friend. It was neat to see them being rented, the cost is just $1 and you can ride as far as you want. It sounds like there's a smartphone app that you use to find the Bird scooters and then at night, the company must collect and recharge them. You cannot ride a Bird without paying first because the wheel is stopped using regenerative braking and a blinking light and beeping noise will sound. Seriously, I saw so many of these things being enjoyed by young people and even two riders at once! I wish I had taken more photos, just a neat concept for a small sunny town to get people to and from destinations quickly, quietly, and without pollution.
